Second Hard White Wheat Quality Targets meeting set for February 28 and March 1 in Portland PORTLAND, OR (February 21, 2002) -- The second Hard White
Wheat (HWW) Quality Targets meeting has been set for February
28 and March 1, 2002, according to co-host Dr. Gary Hou of the
Wheat Marketing Center. Glen Weaver, ConAgra Flour Milling, Omaha,
will co-chair with Dr. Hou. The day-and-a-half workshop/meeting will:
Marketing structures include presentations by the Australian Wheat Board, California Wheat Commission, Odessa Union Warehouse, Columbia Grain International, and U.S. Wheat Associates. In addition, there will be a presentation regarding exporting wheat in containers. Industry utilization presentations will be by U.S. flour miller ConAgra and by processor Taco Bell. Hou, Asian Products Specialist at the Wheat Marketing Center, commented that "our objective is to have people talk about HWW as a class, discuss common problems, and then, as an industry, gain the momentum needed for this product to be available in quantity to meet growing demands from both international and domestic markets. Hou continued that "hard white wheat potential has been reported by U.S. Wheat Associates to be more than four million metric tons. It boasts the agronomic milling and processing attributes of Hard Red Wheat. It also has distinct advantages for world-wide sought after products such as Asian noodles, Chinese steamed breads, whole wheat pan breads, and flat breads, including tortillas." Last year's meeting drew more than 65 participants from 14 states. To date, more than 40 people have registered for this year's meeting. All sessions will be held at the Residence Inn by Marriott/Portland (2115 SW River Parkway, Portland). First workshop sessions begin at 8 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 28 and will continue until 4 p.m. Second sessions begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Mar 1 and continue through lunch.
